What do We Do?

The PAL Lab is directed by Dr. Kaylin Hill and housed in the Psychology Department at the University of Notre Dame. Our research examines a range of processes—including emotion, cognition, and reward—using a range of modalities, in particular event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs provide a measure of neural activity at the scalp, and are well-suited to working with participants across the lifespan. The aims of our research span across basic science (e.g., refining our measures) and applied science (e.g., patterns that relate to psychopathology or mental health concerns).
The ultimate aim of our work is to support individuals and families!
Our research uses developmental psychopathology and eco-developmental perspectives, focused on better understanding vulnerability and intervention, and is actively supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.
What is EEG and ERPs?
EEG is a way to measure electrical activity in the brain using small sensors placed on the head. Our brains are made up of billions of neurons that communicate with each other to allow us to think, feel, and respond to the world around us. EEG electrodes can pick up messages neurons sent through tiny electrical impulses, and record them as wavy line on a computer screen. Please check out our video to learn more about EEG and ERPS!
